RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS

Tessera offers recreational and learning opportunities for individuals with autism because we all benefit from a broad range of opportunities to learn, grow and interact with our peers.

Individuals with autism are often excluded from social and recreational activities due to their inability to verbally express themselves, a short attention span, and lack of appropriate interaction with peers. When children with autism reach adolescence—just as the tremendous physical, emotional and hormonal changes of adolescence occur and individuals with autism struggle to make sense of this complicated time—high-quality programs and resources seem to disappear, including childcare and appropriate daily activities. This often leads to social isolation and decreased physical activity. Individuals with autism and their families need a broad range of programs and services now and throughout their lifespan. Autistic teen enjoys popcorn at the movies.

Our goal is to serve at least 250 people annually with a variety of recreational learning activities designed to provide fulfilling experiences where individuals can learn and grow at their own pace. In the future, we hope to operate a center where people with disabilities are the first thought, not an afterthought. Instead of focusing on what someone cannot do, we will look at what they can do.

Examples of some of our successful programs include a Peer Connections Movie Club; life skills and etiquette classes; a mini gym camp; pottery painting; and our Squish Squash Squeeze and Build event.  Our educational offerings for parents and other caregivers include a Futures Planning Workshop Series that include topics such as benefits planning, guardianships and special needs trusts.
